WTF? I’m annoyed. I’m frustrated. I’m fed up. Definitely more annoyed though. For some reason some SAs in makeup stores don’t think mature women wear makeup. Why the heck is this?!
I shop regularly for makeup, as we all do, but I now avoid three particular stores (I wont name and shame) because apparently I’m either not in their demographic as a mature woman or they just think I’m too old for makeup. I’m fed up with SAs assuming that just because you’re no longer under the age of 50, no longer sporting the latest fashion shades and you’re past the age of having skin as smooth as a baby’s butt, that you don’t buy makeup for yourself anymore!
On one occasion I walked into a well known makeup store, with a full face of makeup on so it was pretty obvious I wear makeup, and was looking for a nice contour palette. To begin with, not a single SA bothered to even ask me if I needed help and when one finally did approach me, she wasn’t particularly helpful. When we discussed the shades of the palette and which one would be best, she asked me who it was for and looked at me with surprise when I said it was for me! What? Am I some form of alien being who shouldn’t wear makeup? Do I not deserve a nice contour palette because I’m on the downhill side of 50? Why would it not be for me?!
On another occasion I was looking for foundation and went into a different, but equally as well known, high end makeup shop. When I asked to have some help choosing the correct foundation shade, the SA had the utter gall to say that it was best to check the shades on the person that it’s actually for. When I said that it was for me, she looked very surprised. Yet again, I was in full face makeup so why on earth would someone assume that I’d be buying foundation for someone else? Aggghhh!!!!
The last occasion was probably the one that really did my head in. Yep, another high end, well known makeup store and yep I was in full face makeup again, this time looking for brushes. When I asked about which brushes she would recommend for a particular task, the SA looked at me and asked (I still can’t believe this!) “Is this for your daughter or a friend?” What the?! I mean seriously! What the?! I’m still in shock over that one.
Again I ask, once you reach 50, are you not supposed to use makeup or brushes? Is there some unwritten rule that says women over 50 shouldn’t play with makeup? Once we hit the half century, are we supposed to no longer care how we look? Are we supposed to never buy makeup again? Someone please show those rules cos I must have missed them on my travels.
Get real people! It doesn’t matter if you’re 17, 33 or 78, makeup is for any age woman and assuming that mature women wont need to buy or use makeup is just downright rude and absurd!
Needless to say, I don’t shop in those three stores anymore, regardless of how much their products might be recommended or praised. Sure, it’s probably just those particular SAs and not the culture of the brand per se but the damage is done my friend. My dollars now get spent on brands that appreciate the diversity of makeup lovers and who welcome my old, wrinkly skin just as much as they do the baby’s butt smooth skin of the 17 year old. I may be older and have wrinkly skin but I’m still a makeup lover.
